I recently had a conversation with someone about the benefits of working with a coach. I explained a coach is there to help you understand and discover what you want in life and desire to accomplish. A coach is there to assist you with a plan and then its implementation, to keep you on track and hold you accountable, without judgment. A coach can help you realize and remove roadblocks, both real and imagined.
The conversation came to a grinding halt as she took in what I said. Her head dropped for a moment and then she responded, “When I was younger, I wanted to be a model. And I was. But I only took jobs that were out of the area. I was so afraid that people I knew may see me. I was afraid of what others might think, like what makes me think I am so beautiful that I can model.”
She seemed a little sad that she had not fully pursued her life’s passion. My response was that life is full of doubters and detractors. We all have them. However, we are often our toughest critic, and that stops us from ever getting starting. We judge ourselves so harshly and spend a lot more time concentrating on our deficiencies and failures instead of on our gifts and ambitions.
I also explained we may be surprised to learn that people don’t spend as much time thinking about us as we imagine. This is often a self-imposed limitation. I told her that the next time she considers a new discipline, look for those who will support you, and you can do the same for them.
We concluded our conversation in a positive, upbeat fashion. She was very excited about her prospects and future. I believe that we have to stretch ourselves beyond our comfort levels in order to accomplish what we want. If we don’t take risks, our lives won’t improve. It is imperative we review our results and then adjust as needed and move forward. But if we judge before we get started, we remain as we are.
I invite you to contact me for a conversation today. I’d love to make your dream come true.
